Luce Bay is a large inlet on Scotland’s southern coast, where the Rhins of Galloway form its western arm and the Machars its eastern edge. The bay stretches twenty miles wide at its mouth, with rocky islets called the Scares marking the entrance. Its shores include fishing villages such as Drummore, Port William and Monreith, each with piers and small harbours. The River Luce flows into the bay near Glenluce, adding fresh water to the salt. Sandhead and Auchenmalg sit on sandy beaches backed by dunes and farmland. The Mull of Galloway, Scotland’s southernmost point, lies just beyond the bay’s eastern limit.
For much of the 20th century the bay served as a bombing range for RAF aircraft based at West Freugh, with a retired minesweeper retrieving practice bombs from Drummore. Allied forces later used the range on a leasing basis, and today QinetiQ conducts test and evaluation activities under Ministry of Defence supervision. Scottish Natural Heritage recognises the bay as a Special Area of Conservation because of its marine and coastal wildlife. Rare plants grow on the dunes at Torrs Warren, while seals and seabirds gather along the rocky skerries. Commercial fishing has declined, but the bay remains important for nature conservation.
Visitors walk the quiet shoreline paths between Port William and Monreith, where fishing boats lie moored and lobster creels dry on the piers. At low tide the sandflats of Terrally Bay reveal pools rich with crabs and small fish. The Mull of Galloway lighthouse stands on cliffs above the sea, offering views across the bay and down the coast. Near Glenluce the riverbank has picnic spots shaded by sycamores and alders. Inland, farm tracks lead to viewpoints over the dunes and marshes where curlews call at dusk. The contrast between wartime history and wild coastal scenery makes the bay a place for quiet exploration.
