Doon Castle

Doon Castle Broch stands on Ardwell Point in the Rhins of Galloway, a narrow peninsula that juts into the North Channel. The broch was first noted by archaeologists in 1912 when RCAHMS recorded it in their inventory of Galloway monuments. Though never excavated, it has appeared in several publications over the past century. Two stone-built entrances once gave access, one facing land and the other sea, showing how the builders used the site’s position. The main structure measures nine metres across, with walls three to four metres thick, and parts still rise to nearly two metres high. The broch’s defences include a deep gully and a six-metre-wide trench spanned by a narrow causeway. Outside the broch, a thicker wall encloses a small rectangular area, entered from the north where the causeway meets the land. Archaeologists have found only rubble inside, since no full excavation has taken place. The east chamber still shows its entrance narrowing from 0.8 to 1.2 metres, while the west chamber remains little understood. These remains suggest the site once housed a small community protected by stone walls and natural gullies. Visitors reach the broch along the point’s grassy slopes, where the North Channel’s tides lap against the rocks below. The surviving walls stand clearly against the sky, their thickness and height still impressive after centuries of wind and rain. From the causeway, the view stretches across the water to distant coastlines, while the enclosed yard and outer wall show how the broch fitted into the landscape. The site offers quiet evidence of Iron Age life, with no crowds and only the sound of the sea to accompany a walk around its ancient stones.
