St George's Church, Brandon Hill

St George’s Church stands on the lower slopes of Brandon Hill, just off Park Street in Bristol. Built in the 1820s by Sir Robert Smirke, it was designed in the Greek Revival style and is now a Grade II* listed building. The church once served the Clifton area before becoming a music venue in 1999. Its conversion included removing the font and adding padded chairs to improve comfort. The crypt now houses a bar and recording studios used by the BBC. The venue is known for presenting classical, jazz, folk, world music and opera. It stages more than 200 events each year and has hosted internationally renowned artists. Performances include those by Angela Hewitt, Nicola Benedetti and Julian Lloyd Webber. Local groups such as the Bristol Ensemble also perform regularly. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment appeared there in 2010. Visitors find a main auditorium seating 562 people and a transformed crypt with a bar. The church’s architecture remains striking, with its Greek Revival design still evident. The surrounding area includes Park Street and Brandon Hill, offering views over the city. The building’s history and modern use create a contrast between past and present.
