Cloncaird Castle

Cloncaird Castle stands beside the Kelsie Burn near Kirkmichael in South Ayrshire, set within a 140-acre estate. Originally built in the 16th century as a feudal mansion, it featured a large square tower and narrow spiral staircase. The castle later became a country house in the early 19th century after major rebuilding. It once served as a convalescent home before returning to private use. The estate includes listed structures such as an Arts and Crafts garage and a stable block. The castle’s history includes notable figures like Walter Mure, who was involved in a 16th-century murder. In the early 19th century, Henry Ritchie transformed the castle’s appearance, giving it its current form. The grounds also contain a pond, weir, fountain, and a walled garden. The castle is recognised as a category B listed building, with additional category C structures on the estate. Visitors find a grand country house with historical features preserved from its feudal past. The grounds offer scenic views along the Kelsie Burn and through the landscaped estate. The walled garden and listed buildings add to the estate’s character. The castle’s setting remains peaceful, away from the village of Kirkmichael. Its history is reflected in the armorial panel dated 1585 still visible on the wall.
