Maybole Castle

Maybole Castle stands on High Street in the small town of Maybole, South Ayrshire. Built in the 16th century for the Earls of Cassillis, it is an L-shaped structure with thick stone walls and Victorian additions. Two corbelled bartizans with conical roofs mark its corners, while decorative stonework includes faces carved around an oriel window. The castle once displayed the Cassillis coat of arms on its exterior, and its original entrance led to a stair-tower. Inside, vaulted cellars sit below a kitchen and scullery, with upper floors divided into chambers. The 19th century saw the addition of two-storey wings, altering its original form. The castle’s history is tied to the powerful Kennedy family, who held influence in Carrick. In 1578, Margaret Kennedy wrote from the castle requesting luxury items like velvet and a locket. A violent feud in the late 16th century ended with the death of Gilbert Kennedy of Bargany, though the earl was acquitted. The castle also features in the legend of John Faa, a Gypsy leader said to have been executed by the earl, with his lover imprisoned within. Architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh later recorded its decaying decorative details in the 1890s. Visitors today see a building still owned by the Kennedy family, part of Maybole’s conservation area. The lower floors contain the original kitchen and cellars, while upper rooms remain largely unused. Restoration work began in the 21st century, funded by grants to address water damage and structural issues. The castle’s thick walls and historic carvings offer a glimpse into its past, even as it awaits further repairs. Its place on High Street links it directly to the town’s other heritage buildings.
