Blairquhan Castle

Blairquhan Castle stands in South Ayrshire, near Maybole, as a Regency-era mansion built in Tudor style. It replaced an older tower house first raised by the McWhirters around 1346. The Kennedys enlarged the medieval stronghold about 1573, but by the late 18th century the Whitefords sold the estate to Sir David Hunter Blair. In 1820 he commissioned architect William Burn to design the present castle, completed four years later with salvaged carvings from the ruins. The family lived there until 2012, when the estate passed to Ganten Scotland. The grounds cover two thousand acres and include veteran trees and a walled garden. James Hunter Blair, a noted horticulturalist, spent decades restoring the landscape and saving an ancient sycamore thought to have been a 16th-century gallows tree. A three-mile drive along the River Girvan leads to the castle, offering long views of rolling parkland. The estate is listed as a Category A building and its gardens appear in Scotland’s Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes. Inside, visitors find antiques and a collection of Scottish paintings. The castle serves as an exclusive-use venue for weddings, corporate events and filming. It appeared in the television programme Beauty and the Geek and stood in for Balmoral in the film The Queen. The interiors and grounds remain open for private hire, preserving the Regency grandeur for modern occasions.
