St Oswald's Church, Worleston

St Oswald’s Church stands in the quiet village of Worleston, Cheshire, built of local rubble stone with steep tiled roofs. Its plan forms a cross, with a short nave, north and south transepts, and a two-bay chancel. A slender flèche rises over the crossing, and most windows are tall lancets with simple stone tracery. Cross finials mark the gables of nave, chancel, and transepts, giving the exterior a plain but dignified look. The church was designed by Charles Lynam of Stoke-on-Trent and opened in 1874 after a foundation stone was laid in 1872. In 1997 a serious fire damaged much of the interior, but the building was restored and reopened. The church is worth visiting for its well-preserved Victorian craftsmanship and the quality of its stained glass. The east window shows a crucifix flanked by figures of Saint Mary, Saint John, Saint Oswald, and Saint Werburgh, made by Kempe. In the north transept a memorial window to Baron William Henry Schroder depicts the Good Shepherd and Saint Hubert, executed by Morris & Co. The south transept windows contain scenes of Noah, Abraham, David, and Daniel, while the west window includes Hannah with Samuel and Saint Elizabeth. The circular pulpit stands on seven slender shafts, and the font is a simple cup shape on a four-armed base. Inside, three steps lead from the nave to the chancel, each riser bearing an inscription. A low stone wall with a brass rail separates the chancel from the sanctuary, which has a patterned mosaic floor. On the south side of the sanctuary a sedilia and piscina are set into the wall, and a priest’s door opens in the south wall of the chancel. The two-manual organ is mounted on the north wall of the chancel, and a door in the north wall leads to the vestry. The church’s calm interior, lit by clear lancets, offers a quiet space for reflection beside fine examples of 19th-century church art.
