Poole Methodist Chapel

Poole Methodist Chapel stands in Wettenhall Road, Poole, Cheshire, in north-west England. It is a small, single-storey brick building with a slate roof, built in 1834 as a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. The chapel has a square plan and a three-bay entrance front, with a central door framed by Gothic-style arched windows. Above the door is an elliptical panel that reads ‘Wesleyan Methodist Chapel’ and the date 1834. The brickwork under the eaves forms a dentilled pattern, adding to the chapel’s simple yet distinctive exterior. The chapel is recognised on the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II listed building. Inside, a wooden reading desk with an ogee cornice sits on a moulded plinth, flanked by steps with balusters and newels. The reredos is panelled, with a wider central panel topped by a semicircular head, decorated with garlands and roses. A communion table with rails and a treadle organ are also present, reflecting the chapel’s continuing use for worship. Visitors find a quiet, uncluttered interior where the craftsmanship of the 19th century remains visible. The Gothic motifs on the windows and doorway, and the panelled fittings, give the space a sense of historical continuity. The chapel’s modest size and restrained design make it a place of calm reflection, still organised for Methodist services today.
