St Mary's Church, Nantwich

St Mary’s Church stands in the heart of Nantwich, Cheshire, on ground once occupied by a small chapel. The present building, begun in 1340, mixes Decorated and Perpendicular styles, its red sandstone walls rising to an octagonal tower that dominates the skyline. The church is Grade I listed and often called the ‘Cathedral of South Cheshire’ for its scale and craftsmanship. Raymond Richards praised it as one of Cheshire’s great architectural treasures, while Alec Clifton-Taylor listed it among outstanding English parish churches. The interior vaulting, screens and woodwork show how masons from Yorkshire, Lichfield and Gloucester shaped its long history. The church survived plague, civil war and flood before Sir George Gilbert Scott’s sweeping 19th-century restoration. Scott removed galleries and box pews, lowered the floor and heightened the roofs, though critics later complained of lost details. Nikolaus Pevsner noted the abrupt shift from rich Decorated windows to plain Perpendicular ones, while the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings argued that great injury was done. Nikolaus Pevsner also remarked on the tower’s abrupt change of style, a reminder of the Black Death’s interruption. Despite these debates, the building remains a living parish church in the diocese of Chester. Inside, the nave’s raised roof hides traces of 19th-century painted texts and a Jacobean pulpit carved by Thomas Finch in 1601. The south transept shelters an alabaster effigy of Sir David Craddock, once mayor of Bordeaux, while the north transept holds a 1676 oak chest and a 1737 bench. The crossing vault designed by Scott carries the weight of centuries above, and the porch vault shelters a Green Man carving. Brass memorials, alabaster tombs and the 1977 Jubilee curtains line the walls, each telling part of the town’s story.
