Ludwigsburg Museum

The Ludwigsburg Museum traces the cultural history of the city and its region. Housed in the MIK building, it stands in the city centre near the town hall. The museum holds about 25,000 objects, displaying around 500 at any time. The collection began in the 19th century with the Historical Association’s aim to gather antiquities and art. Early exhibitions included personal items belonging to Justinus Kerner, Eduard Mörike and David Friedrich Strauß. Royal visitors such as King Wilhelm II of Württemberg once attended a show. The museum moved several times before finding a permanent home in the MIK in 2013. Visitors enter a light-filled hall where a tall wooden steeple and a statue of Duke Carl Eugen introduce the city’s past. A city model shows the baroque plan of the Residenzschloss and its surrounding streets. Upstairs, a gallery uses stone blocks to mark key moments in the city’s history. The first room, Guter Fürst, displays copper engravings of Schloss Ludwigsburg and other palaces designed by Johann Friedrich Nette and Donato Giuseppe Frisoni.
