MIK Museum Information Kunst

The MIK Museum Information Kunst stands in Ludwigsburg’s Baroque old town. The building began as a 1731 granary and later served as a government office, post office and district court. After a seven-year conversion by Lederer+Ragnarsdóttir+Oei, it reopened in 2011 as a single centre for the Ludwigsburg Museum, the Kunstverein Kreis Ludwigsburg, the city’s tourist office and a café. The conversion preserved the historic fabric while adding 2 300 m² of new space. The opening exhibition featured Liu Bolin’s first show in Germany, in which the artist merges with his surroundings. Rainer Walder’s photographs documented the building’s own transformation for the museum’s basement display. Inside, white walls and polished black floors contrast with grey-white historic plaster. A tall glazed atrium leads to the museum’s first-floor gallery and an upper balcony. Below, a vaulted cellar hosts Kunstverein shows, while a second basement room, with wave-shaped white ceiling, belongs to the museum. The exterior’s white render sets it apart from neighbouring pastel-yellow Baroque façades.
