Colliers Wood

Colliers Wood is a station on the Northern line in south-west London. It sits between Tooting Broadway and South Wimbledon, at the corner of Colliers Wood High Street and Christchurch Road. The station belongs to London fare zone three. It opened in 1926 as part of the Morden extension of the City & South London Railway. Charles Holden designed the building, his first major project for the Underground. Holden was chosen by Frank Pick, the general manager of the Underground Electric Railways Company of London. The station’s modernist design features a double-height box clad in white Portland stone. A three-part glazed screen forms the front façade, divided by columns whose capitals are three-dimensional versions of the Underground roundel. The central panel holds a large roundel. The building has shops on each side and is a Grade II listed structure. Across the road stands a public house named ‘The Charles Holden’ in honour of the architect. Nearby is Merton Bus garage, which opened in 1913. Visitors find a clean, functional station with wide platforms and clear signage. The original glazed screen and roundel details remain intact. The surrounding area offers shops along Colliers Wood High Street and Christchurch Road. Buses route 57, 131, 152, 200, 219, 470 and night route N155 serve the station. The station’s architecture provides a quiet contrast to the busy streets nearby.
