St George's, University of London
St George’s, University of London stands on the Tooting campus in south-west London, sharing its grounds with St George’s Hospital, one of the country’s major trauma centres. The university began in 1834 as part of the hospital founded in 1733 near Hyde Park Corner. In 1980 it moved south to Tooting with the hospital, creating a single health-science site. A joint faculty with Kingston University adds nursing, physiotherapy and radiography courses. The campus includes clinical skills labs, a simulation suite and a library holding about 42,000 books and 10,000 journals.
The university is recognised for its four-year graduate-entry medicine programme, introduced in 2000 with 35 students and now copied by many others. Entry is highly competitive and requires the GAMSAT test. Research and postgraduate degrees span biomedical and healthcare sciences. International students can study foundation or medical degrees, including programmes in Cyprus with clinical placements in Israel and the United States. Anatomy teaching uses prosections and optional dissection sessions.
Students organise events through the Students’ Union, including fund-raising weeks and quiz-team entries. Societies range from academic groups like the Henry Gray Anatomy Society to social activities. The Rob Lowe Sports Centre provides a sports hall, squash courts and fitness rooms for use by students and staff. Clinical placements take place at hospitals across south London and beyond, giving practical experience in varied settings.
