Tooting Broadway tube station

Tooting Broadway is a London Underground station in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It stands at the corner of Tooting High Street and Mitcham Road, two busy roads in south London. The station sits in fare zone three, between Tooting Bec and Colliers Wood on the Northern line’s Morden branch. South Thames College and St George’s Hospital are both within a few minutes’ walk. Nearby are Tooting Market, Tooting Methodist Church and Tooting Primary School, showing the station’s place at the heart of a busy district. The station opened in 1926 after the Underground Electric Railways Company revived earlier plans delayed by the First World War. Architect Charles Holden designed the building in a modernist style, his first major project for the Underground. The façade is clad in white Portland stone with a large roundel above the entrance. Holden worked under Frank Pick, the company’s general manager, who wanted a fresh approach to station design. The building is now Grade II listed and has shops on either side of the entrance. Inside, the station has escalators down to the platforms. Trains run every two to four minutes at peak times, heading north to Edgware, High Barnet or Mill Hill East. Southbound services go to Morden, though some terminate here. The reversing siding between the tunnels allows trains to change direction without leaving the station. The building’s clean lines and central roundel make it a notable example of early 20th-century transport architecture.
