Creise

Creise is a long, whale-backed mountain in the Black Mount range of the Scottish Highlands. It overlooks Glen Etive at its northern end and forms part of the Black Mount’s four Munros. The ridge stretches for three kilometres with four distinct high points, the highest being the unnamed summit promoted to Munro status in 1981. The mountain’s Gaelic name, A’ Chrèise, may refer to rich grazing land used to fatten cattle. Its steep northern buttress, Sròn na Crèise, is clearly visible from the A82 road and the Kings House Hotel. Creise also serves as a popular winter destination for cross-country skiers from the nearby White Corries ski area. The mountain divides rainfall between Scotland’s east and west coasts. Water from its southern slopes flows into Coire Ba, one of Scotland’s largest corries, and reaches the Firth of Tay via the Rivers Ba, Tummel and Tay. All other drainage travels west through Glen Etive and Loch Etive to the coast near Oban. The ridge’s four high points include Clach Leathad, once considered the summit, and Stob a’ Ghlais Choire at the northern end. The crags of Sròn na Crèise offer a challenging scramble to the top, though winter conditions demand extra caution. Climbers often tackle Creise alongside its neighbour Meall a’ Bhuiridh, starting from the White Corries ski centre. The route follows the chairlift line before crossing a col to reach Creise’s summit plateau. A direct ascent heads west across moorland to the foot of Sròn na Crèise, then follows a scrambler’s path to the ridge. The Clachlet Traverse links four Black Mount Munros over 25 kilometres, finishing at the Kings House Inn in Glen Coe. From the summit, walkers see the cliffs of Buachaille Etive Mòr and the western edge of Rannoch Moor.
