Kingshouse Hotel

The Kings House Hotel is a remote inn at the eastern end of Glen Coe in the Scottish Highlands. It sits about two kilometres east of Glen Etive on the edge of Rannoch Moor. The building faces Buachaille Etive Mor, a popular spot with rock climbers. The hotel stands on the site of an 18th-century coaching inn. In 2019 it reopened after a modern redevelopment that kept only the original inn. The inn was used as a barracks by the Duke of Cumberland’s troops after the 1745 Jacobite Rising. It was one of Scotland’s oldest licensed inns and served travellers crossing Rannoch Moor. Parts of the military road built after the rising are now part of the West Highland Way. The poet William Wordsworth’s sister Dorothy stayed there in 1803 and wrote of its poor conditions. By the early 20th century, standards had improved and visitors received full hotel service. Today the hotel offers food and drink with 57 bedrooms. It caters to walkers, climbers and skiers from the nearby White Corries resort. Campers often stay nearby under Scotland’s outdoor access rules. The surroundings are open moorland with views of the mountains. The refurbished building blends the original inn with modern facilities.
