Burgstall Bernbeuren

Burgstall Bernbeuren stands on a hilltop 825 metres above sea level in the Bernbeuren district of Weilheim-Schongau. The site overlooks the village church half a kilometre to the east. Its name means ‘castle site’ and marks where a medieval spur castle once rose. The remains vanished long ago, yet the spot remains protected as a Bavarian archaeological monument. Local records list it as D-1-8230-0012 under the category ‘high or late medieval castle site’. The only trace left is the earthworks and the memory of its walls. Werner Meyer’s 1986 handbook of Upper Bavarian castles still recognises Bernbeuren among the region’s lost strongholds. No visible stonework survives above ground today. The field called ‘Auf der Burg’ keeps the place name alive. Archaeologists have recorded the site but found no standing ruins. Visitors walk a quiet farm track to reach the gentle mound. Grass and young trees cover the old defences. From the crest there are wide views over the valley towards the Alps. The church spire below shows how the castle once commanded the approach. The air is calm, broken only by the sound of cattle in nearby meadows. The place invites a short climb and a long look at the empty horizon.
