Flößermuseum

The Flößermuseum stands in Lechbruck am See, a village beside the lake of the same name in the Ostallgäu district. It is a small museum dedicated to the local history of timber rafting and the people who once floated logs and building stone down the Lech to Augsburg. The building itself dates from the mid-17th century and once stood on the riverbank; the river has since shifted eastward by about a hundred metres. The museum shows how raftsmen lived and worked through the centuries when Lechbruck was a rafting village. Exhibits include tools, models and reconstructions that bring the craft to life. Visitors learn how rafts carried timber and stone from the upper Lech valley as far as Augsburg, and even to Belgrade until 1819. Inside the timbered house, rooms are arranged to show the raftsmen’s quarters, the workshop and the store for ropes and tackle. Outside, the quiet village street and the nearby lake offer a peaceful setting. The building is protected as a monument, preserving both its original structure and the story of a vanished trade.
