Fuar Tholl

Fuar Tholl is a mountain in the Scottish Highlands, standing 21 kilometres south-west of Achnasheen in the Wester Ross area. It rises to 907 metres, just seven metres short of Munro status, yet many consider it the finest peak in Glen Carron. The name comes from the Gaelic for ‘Cold Hole’, describing the shaded eastern corrie that never sees direct sunlight. Its summit ridge resembles an upturned face, earning it the nickname Wellington’s Nose after the Duke’s profile. The Mainreachan Buttress forms the mountain’s striking nose, a 150-metre-high cliff used for ice climbing. Three distinct tops mark the summit ridge, with the highest topped by a trig point. The mountain’s western side holds Coire Mainnrichean, a dramatic corrie filled with rough stone and 150-metre cliffs. Ice climbers rate the Mainreachan Buttress among Scotland’s best venues, with many routes pioneered by Andy Nisbet. The summit ridge stretches for one kilometre, connecting three peaks: the 907-metre main top, an 895-metre second top, and an 857-metre western peak. The eastern corrie gives the mountain its name, a deep hollow kept cold by perpetual shade. The contrast between the rugged cliffs and the smooth summit ridge makes the climb memorable. Walkers often start from Achnashellach station, following a path towards Torridon before turning left to the bealach between Fuar Tholl and Sgorr Ruadh. From there a steep, loose track leads to the summit, offering views across Glen Carron. Alternative routes from the south allow a circular walk, sometimes linking Fuar Tholl with Corrie Lair and two nearby Munros. The Kyle of Lochalsh railway line and the A890 road run close by, making access straightforward. The mountain’s varied terrain and striking landforms reward those who reach its summit.
