Sgòrr Ruadh

Sgòrr Ruadh is a red-sandstone Munro standing between Strath Carron and Glen Torridon in Wester Ross. It forms part of the Coire Lair group near Achnashellach with two other peaks, Beinn Liath Mhòr and Fuar Tholl. The mountain’s steep terraced buttresses and wide scree slopes show the Torridon Hills’ character. Its north-west face has sheer cliffs that draw rock climbers with about twenty traditional and winter routes. A large gully splits the crag’s centre, while easier lines lie elsewhere on the face. The climb usually starts from Achnashellach along a two-kilometre right of way up Coire Lair. After crossing the River Lair—often by wading—a cairn marks a left turn towards the Bhealaich Mhoir pass. From the pass top a 275-metre ascent bypasses the main buttresses and gullies to reach the summit. The final ridge sits on the edge of sheer drops, offering wide views across the Torridon mountains and the nearby Munros. The summit cairn stands in a dramatic position above precipitous slopes. Beinn Liath Mhòr and Maol Chean-dearg appear clearly, along with the western Torridon giants. Many walkers then continue to Beinn Liath Mhòr, but the connecting ground holds crags and high rock steps that make the onward route less straightforward.
