Loch Dùghaill
Loch Dùghaill is a freshwater tidal loch on the River Carron in Wester Ross, Highland. The A890 road and the Kyle of Lochalsh Line run along its northwest shore. Loch Carron lies eight kilometres downriver. The loch stretches southwest to northeast with contrasting slopes on either side. The north shore climbs gently while the south end opens into the River Carron with small lochans on the flat plain. On the east side, cliffs rise almost vertically to the plateau of Creag An Eilein. The landscape offers dramatic contrasts in height and terrain. The east shore features Sgurr na Feartaig at 862 metres and Creag Dhubh Mhor at 612 metres. The west side, where the road and railway lie, rises more steeply to Fuar Tholl at 907 metres. These mountains frame the loch with sheer rock faces and high plateaus. The river’s outflow at the southern end adds a flat, open area of small lochans. The railway line follows the gentle slope on the west bank. Visitors find a quiet Highland loch framed by towering peaks. The A890 road provides easy access along the northwest shore. The Kyle of Lochalsh Line runs parallel, offering views from the train. The east side’s cliffs rise sharply from the water’s edge. The southern end opens into the River Carron’s flat plain with scattered lochans. The mountains on both sides create a striking backdrop of rock and heather. The loch’s tidal nature means water levels change with the river’s flow.
