Wolfsscheune

The Wolfsscheune stands as a ruined brick building north of Klosterstraße in Bad Doberan. It was once a two-storey hall house in the Lübeck style of the late 13th century, possibly built under Abbot Conrad III. The ground floor held several rooms while an upper hall could be reached from outside, suggesting it once accommodated noble guests or served as a hospice. The structure later became a cloth and clothing workshop for the monastery before becoming a wool manufactory with 24 looms in 1762. After the factory closed in 1767 it was used as a grain barn until a storm in the 1850s stripped the roof and left the ruins we see today. The name Wolfsscheune may come from the nearby Wolfsberg. Visitors find the remaining north side wall and both gable ends forming a rectangle 31.8 metres long and 11 metres wide. The walls are hollow shells filled with rubble and have segment-arched windows. The exposed masonry shows the building’s original grandeur despite centuries of decay.
