Doberan Abbey

Doberan Abbey stands in Bad Doberan, a town in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Founded in 1171, it was the first Cistercian monastery in Mecklenburg and became a key political, social and spiritual centre. The abbey church, now Doberan Minster, is one of the most important Brick Gothic buildings in the region. For centuries it served as the burial place of the Princes of Mecklenburg. The Thirty Years’ War and French occupation caused serious damage, and later restorations altered its appearance before the 1960s and 1970s brought a return to earlier forms. The minster holds the graves of notable figures such as Albert of Sweden and Margaret Sambiria. Magnus II, Duke of Mecklenburg, also lies there. The abbey’s history is documented in works by local historians including Ernst von Bülow and Friedrich Compart. Its buildings reflect the changing fortunes of the Cistercian order and the region. The minster remains in use today, linking past and present. Visitors find a church of red brick with tall, narrow windows and vaulted ceilings. The interior contains medieval tombs and memorials. The surrounding former abbey precinct includes remnants of the monks’ living quarters and workshops. The minster’s exterior shows the characteristic Brick Gothic style of northern Germany. The setting combines the grandeur of the church with the quiet of a small town.
