Rogie Falls

Rogie Falls lie on the Black Water in Ross-shire, a river that tumbles through deep Highland forest a few kilometres north-west of Contin. The falls form a stepped cascade beside the A835 road, where water drops over ledges of smooth rock into deep pools below. A small footbridge crosses the narrowest point, giving a clear view of the spray and foam. Forest paths lead visitors close to the water, winding through Scots pine and birch. The site is popular with photographers and walkers who enjoy the quiet of the glen. The bridge is narrow and has a steep flight of steps at its far end, so only five people may stand on it at once. The footpaths are kept in good order but are not suitable for wheelchairs. Light conditions change quickly under the trees, so pictures taken in the evening show the falls in softer light. On sunnier days shorter camera exposures prevent blurring from the constant vibration of the bridge. From the car park a short walk brings visitors to the first viewpoint over the upper cascade. A longer path follows the river downstream, crossing wooden bridges and duckboards laid across wet ground. The air smells of pine resin and damp stone, and the sound of rushing water fills the glen. In winter the spray freezes on the branches, turning the forest into a silver lacework.
