Black Water

The Black Water is a river in the Highlands of Scotland. It starts where the Glascarnoch River meets the Abhainn Srath a' Bhàthaich, close to the Black Bridge on the A835 road. The river flows southeast past the village of Garve. It passes through Loch Garve and Loch na Cròic, winding around Eilean nan Daraich. After flowing over Rogie Falls, it continues past Contin, around Contin Island, before joining the River Conon near Moy Bridge. The river’s flow is controlled for the Conon Hydro Scheme. Water from its two main tributaries is diverted through Mossford Power Station. This reduces the river’s natural flow downstream. The hydro scheme uses the river’s energy to generate power. The landscape around the Black Water shows the effects of this managed flow. Visitors see a river shaped by both nature and human engineering. The Black Water winds through quiet Highland scenery. Rogie Falls is a notable feature along its course. The river’s banks offer peaceful walks and views of the surrounding hills. The controlled flow creates a steady stream rather than dramatic changes. The area remains a quiet part of the Highlands, with few signs of heavy industry.
