Newport International Sports Village

Newport International Sports Village stands on the former Spytty Fields in the south-east of Newport, South Wales. Locally it is still called Spytty Park. The complex brings together football, athletics, cycling, tennis, swimming and cricket on one site. A football development centre and athletics stadium share the space with a velodrome and cycle speedway track. Tennis courts, an indoor gym and a competition swimming pool complete the range of facilities. The velodrome has served Great Britain’s track cycling team as their exclusive base before three Olympic Games. In 2012 the team used it for their final preparations for the London Summer Olympics. The football development centre has staged County Championship cricket matches since 1990. Newport County A.F.C. once played at the athletics stadium, while Llanwern A.F.C. and Newport Harriers Athletic Club still train there. Visitors find a 25-metre eight-lane pool with a movable floor and more than five hundred seats. The tennis centre offers indoor and outdoor courts plus a gym. Two cricket pitches sit behind a pavilion with a small viewing area. Cricket nets behind artificial turf cater for summer play, while indoor nets serve winter training. The cycle speedway track winds beside the velodrome where Olympic cyclists once rode.
