Geraint Thomas National Velodrome

The Geraint Thomas National Velodrome stands in Newport, South Wales, inside the Newport International Sports Village near Lliswerry. It is an indoor arena built around a 250-metre Siberian pine track. The building also holds a function room, a dance studio, a free weights room, a fitness suite, a drug-testing room and a multipurpose indoor sports arena. Seating for 500 spectators lines the track. Welsh Cycling keeps its head office here, and Newport Velo Youth Cycling Club trains on site. The velodrome has prepared British track cyclists for five Olympic Games. Geraint Thomas, Wales’ first Tour de France winner, was honoured when the venue took his name in 2018. It has twice hosted the British National Track Championships, in 2022 and 2023. An outdoor cycle speedway track beside the building is home to Newport Cycle Speedway Club. Visitors find the covered track surrounded by rows of seats. The fitness suite and weights room are open to the public. The dance studio and function room host events. The drug-testing room shows how elite standards are maintained. Outside, the cycle speedway track offers a different kind of riding. The whole complex sits within a larger sports village.
