Masnerkopf

The Masnerkopf is a 2,828-metre peak in the Samnaun range of the Austrian Alps. It stands on the northern ridge between the Paznaun valley to the north and the Oberinntal valley to the south. To the north the Hexensattel saddle separates it from the 3,035-metre Hexenkopf; to the south the 2,780-metre Minderskopf is its nearest neighbour. On its slopes sits the Hexenseehütte at 2,588 metres, a key base for climbers heading for the Hexenkopf. In winter the mountain lies within the Serfaus–Fiss–Ladis ski area and is served by a six-seat chairlift installed in 2011. The usual route starts from the Hexenseehütte, which can be reached from Serfaus via Scheid and Arrezjoch in about five hours, or from Pfunds via the Serfauser Ochsenberghütte at 1,872 metres. From the hut the path crosses the Hexensattel and climbs a moderately steep, stony slope to the summit in roughly forty-five minutes. This north-east ridge route is the simplest way to reach the top. The Hexenseehütte itself offers basic overnight accommodation for walkers and skiers. From the summit there are wide views across the Samnaun peaks and down into the Paznaun and Oberinntal valleys. The contrast between summer alpine meadows and winter ski runs adds to the appeal. The chairlift makes the lower slopes easily accessible, while the higher sections remain a quieter, more challenging environment. The mountain’s position on the border of two great valleys gives it a commanding presence in the landscape.
