Furgler

The Furgler stands in the Samnaun Alps in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is one of the most visited mountains in the range, rising to 3,004 metres. The nearby tourist resort of Serfaus serves as the usual starting point for climbs. The ski area of Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis lies close to the mountain, making access easier. Two lift stations, the middle station at 1,980 metres and the Lassida top station at 2,351 metres, provide gateways to the ascent routes. The mountain is worth the journey for its well-marked paths and manageable routes. The northern route passes the Furglersee lake at 2,458 metres before crossing the Furglerjoch col at 2,748 metres. The southern route leads over the Böderköpfe peaks and around the Tieftalsee lake at 2,783 metres. Both routes can be combined in a crossing that takes about five and a half hours. No special climbing equipment is needed, though good footwear is essential. At the summit stands a nine-metre-high wooden cross erected in 1988. Two memorial tablets recall earlier crosses and the helpers who made them possible. A third tablet honours Siegmund Oberacher, remembered for his love of the mountains. In clear weather the summit offers an outstanding all-round view of countless Alpine peaks.
