Gomm's Wood

Gomm’s Wood is a Local Nature Reserve of 18.1 hectares on the edge of High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. It is owned and managed by Wycombe District Council. The site contains chalk grassland, ancient and young woodland, and areas of scrub. Coppicing keeps the woodland structure varied and full of light. Bullfinches and woodpeckers are among the birds that live here. The grassland supports at least eight species of orchid. Silver-washed fritillary butterflies glide over the flowers in summer. The wood offers several access points for visitors. Forest Way, Herbert Road and Cock Lane all lead into the reserve. Paths wind through the different habitats so walkers can explore grassland, coppice and mature trees. Signs explain the management work that keeps the site diverse. Visitors often hear woodpeckers drumming before they see them. Wildflowers colour the grassland in late spring and early summer. Butterflies follow the nectar from orchid to orchid. A short walk from High Wycombe town centre brings people to quiet clearings and shaded rides. The varied layers of vegetation shelter small mammals and nesting birds. Wild garlic scents the air in April and May. Children spot butterflies while parents read the information boards. The wood feels like a small countryside island beside the town. It is a place where the seasons change what can be seen each month.
