Wycombe Museum

Wycombe Museum sits in Castle Hill House, a 16th- or early-17th-century building on Priory Avenue in High Wycombe. The house was remodelled in about 1778 and the museum is surrounded by Victorian gardens. It is run by Wycombe Heritage and Arts Trust. The building is Grade II listed and stands near the town centre. The gardens provide a quiet setting for visitors. The museum shows the history of High Wycombe and its furniture trade. Displays include Windsor chairs, lace, art and natural history. There are tools and furniture linked to the local chair-making industry. Craftsmen at work appear on videotapes in the collection. An art collection holds oil paintings, prints, watercolours and sculpture. Trade tokens and coins from the area are also on show. Visitors find an archive of sale catalogues, price lists and account books from the 19th century. Photographs record the town and its furniture trade. The museum once housed Wycombe Wanderers memorabilia, including the Comanche mascot, but this display closed. The building appeared in the television series Gavin & Stacey, written by James Corden.
