Warren Street tube station

Warren Street station stands at the crossing of Tottenham Court Road and Euston Road in Fitzrovia, a district in the London Borough of Camden. The station takes its name from Warren Street, which itself was named after the 18th-century naval officer Sir Peter Warren. It serves the Northern and Victoria lines of the London Underground and lies in fare zone 1. The station is the nearest tube stop to University College Hospital, situated directly opposite its main entrance. Despite being less busy than many nearby stations, it provides a useful interchange between the two lines. The station opened in 1907 as Euston Road, designed by Leslie Green in the distinctive oxblood red tile style of the early 20th century. In the 1930s Charles Holden carried out a major refurbishment, installing escalators in place of the original lifts. The Victoria line platforms opened in 1968 as a temporary terminus, with trains reversing at the southbound platform before the line extended south to Victoria the following year. In 2012 Warren Street became the first London Underground station to offer dedicated Wi-Fi. Visitors find a station with platforms tiled in deep red and cream, still bearing the name Euston Road on the Northern line walls. The interchange between lines once involved a staircase and two escalators, later improved to ease passenger flow. The station’s ticket hall retains features from the 1934 rebuild, including original ironwork and glazed screens. Above ground, several London bus routes serve the stop, linking it to the wider city. The area around Warren Street offers cafés and bookshops, making it a practical starting point for exploring Fitzrovia.
