Euston Square tube station

Euston Square station stands at the corner of Euston Road and Gower Street in central London, just north of University College London. Its main entrance faces the tower of University College Hospital across the street. The station sits in fare zone one on the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. It lies between Great Portland Street to the west and King’s Cross St Pancras to the east. The multi-interchange Euston station is a short walk away through Euston Square Gardens. The station opened in 1863 as Gower Street, built by the Metropolitan Railway, the world’s first underground railway. In 1909 it was renamed Euston Square after reconstruction work by the railway’s architect C. W. Clark. During the 1930s the platforms were lengthened and a single ticket office was added above the tracks. Bomb damage in the Second World War led to rebuilding of the southern entrance, later incorporated into the Wellcome Trust headquarters. Visitors find a station entrance set into the corner of the Wellcome Trust building on Gower Street. A pedestrian subway links this entrance to the north side of Euston Road. Two lifts provide step-free access from the main entrance to the westbound platform. The platforms retain evidence of their original brick arches and ventilation shafts. Above ground, the rebuilt station buildings reflect the changes made over more than a century of use.
