Burg Wahlwies

Burg Wahlwies stands on the Roßberg hill, 589 metres above sea level, about one kilometre south-west of Wahlwies church. It was a small medieval stronghold built by a local noble family in the 13th century. The site is now marked only by earthworks and a pair of defensive ditches. One ditch is fifteen metres wide and four metres deep, showing how the builders shaped the land to protect the place. Locals still call it Bauernwacht, the farmers’ watch, because it later served as a refuge during the Thirty Years’ War. The name points to its role sheltering villagers rather than housing knights. The remains give a clear picture of a modest but effective fortification. Archaeologists recognise it as part of a wider network of small castles in the Hegau region. Written records from the 13th century mention the noble family who probably lived here, though no stone buildings survive. The double ditch system shows how the builders combined natural slopes with man-made trenches to slow attackers. Such details help historians understand how low-ranking nobles defended their land in the Middle Ages. The site also illustrates how later generations reused old strongholds for new purposes. Visitors reach the hill by a short walk from Wahlwies village. The path climbs through open meadows and light woodland, giving views across the surrounding countryside. At the top, the two wide ditches curve across the hilltop, their steep sides still visible after centuries of weathering. The open ground around the ditches lets the wind blow freely, so the spot feels exposed and airy. On clear days the Bodensee glints in the distance, linking the old fort with the wider region. The place is quiet, with only the sound of birds and the occasional walker breaking the stillness.
