Aichhorner Kapelle

The Aichhorner Kapelle stands beside a farm in the village of Aichhorn, Heiligenblut, Carinthia. Built in 1819 by Sebastian Tribuser, it is a late-baroque classical chapel with a rectangular nave ending in an eight-sided apse. A wooden bell tower rises above the west gable, which is painted with pilasters and a round-arched door. Inside, a square dome crowns the space, leading west to a gallery and east to a rounded apse. The chapel’s folk frescoes were painted in 1819 by Joseph Wurnitsch. The dome shows the Last Supper surrounded by scenes of Christ’s Passion: the Agony in the Garden, Flagellation, Crowning with Thorns and Carrying of the Cross. On the apse walls are the Raising of the Cross, the Crucifixion and the Deposition. Painted pilasters at the corners depict Saints Sebastian and Florian. The altar’s central carving shows the Lamentation over Christ. Behind it, a painted altarpiece imitates marble columns and a canopy, with a small image of the Crucifixion above. On the mensa stand carved figures of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene, flanked by four candle holders made of stone pine from the chapel’s founding years.
