Winterbergdenkmal

The Winterbergdenkmal once stood on the Winterberg hill in Saarbrücken, a 30-metre tower built on an artificial mound with a circular walkway. It marked the Prussian victory at the Battle of Spichern on 6 August 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War. The name Winterberg comes from an old vineyard, Wingert-Berg, where grapes were once grown. After 1945 only the restored base and steps remained, protected as a monument. The original design included a ten-sided neogothic hall inspired by the Rhens Königsstuhl. A tall tower rose above it, bearing the inscription ‘Deutschlands Helden 1870–1871’. The monument was funded partly by Emperor Wilhelm I, who donated 2,000 thalers in 1873. Construction ran from 1872 to 1874 under Regierungsrat Otto Lieber, a railway engineer turned building inspector. Lieber had earlier designed a neo-gothic station at Beckingen. The hall’s arches echoed the medieval Rhens throne where German kings were once elected. The tower’s relief listed the regiments that fought in 1870, and some saw it as a modern echo of the ancient Irminsul. The unveiling took place on 10 August 1874 with Prussian war minister Georg von Kameke present. Today the reconstructed pedestal and broad staircase remain under protection. Visitors find a quiet mound with clear views over Saarbrücken. The surviving base shows the original neogothic arches and the start of the tower shaft. Nearby streets still carry names from the Prussian era, though they were changed after 1945. The site offers a place to pause and look back at the monument’s history. The surrounding hillside is planted with grass and young trees. From the top of the steps the city spreads out below.
