Sender Saarbrücken-Winterberg
The Sender Saarbrücken-Winterberg stands on the Winterberg hill within Saarbrücken. It is a radio transmission tower built by Deutsche Funkturm to broadcast FM signals across the city and nearby areas. A 100-metre concrete tower carries the antennas high above the ground. Before the Schoksberg transmitter opened in the 1970s, this site served as the main television relay for the whole Saarland, carrying ZDF and SR programmes. After 1977 it was downgraded to a local fill-in transmitter for Saarbrücken, keeping a few analogue TV channels alive. Today the tower still carries FM radio, though one planned frequency for Deutschlandradio Kultur never went on air. Visitors see a plain concrete shaft rising above the Winterberg woods, with no public access inside. The hilltop offers wide views over the Saar valley and the French border beyond.
