University of East London

The University of East London stands on three campuses in Stratford and Docklands, in the London Borough of Newham. The oldest roots go back to 1898 when the West Ham Technical Institute opened as a ‘people’s university’ with science, engineering and art courses. In 1992 it became a university after merging with other colleges and modernising its buildings. Over 40,000 students from more than 160 countries now study here across three sites. The Stratford Campus centres on University House, a 19th-century listed building near the 2012 Olympic Park. It houses the School of Education and Communities, the School of Health, Sport and Bioscience, and the School of Psychology. The Centre for Clinical Education, opened in 2008, is London’s only provider of podiatric education in partnership with the NHS. A £13 million library designed by Make Architects opened in 2013. The Docklands Campus opened in 1999 on the Royal Albert Dock and is the largest of the three. It is linked to London City Airport by the Docklands Light Railway and has 1,200 student rooms, shops and cafés. SportsDock, a £21 million centre, served as Team USA’s training base during the 2012 Olympics. University Square Stratford, opened in 2013, is shared with Birkbeck and offers performance studios and business simulation facilities.
