River Carron

The River Carron flows through Wester Ross in the Highlands, starting in Ledgowan Forest. It collects water from Carron Bog before passing through Loch Scaven, Loch Dùghaill, and Loch Carron. The river travels southwest from Achnashellach for 19 kilometres, widening into Loch Doule near Glen Carron. After another 4 kilometres it reaches the Inner Sound at Loch Carron’s head near Strathcarron. The river’s recovery shows how conservation efforts can restore wildlife. Stocking juvenile Atlantic salmon brought the fish back from local extinction, improving biodiversity. Kingfishers now live along its banks, and ospreys visit more often than before. The Highland railway follows part of the river’s southeast shore, linking Achnashellach to Kyle of Lochalsh. Visitors find a peaceful Highland river surrounded by forests and bogs. The railway line offers views of the water as it winds through Glen Carron. Loch Doule’s calm waters reflect the surrounding hills, while the river’s lower reaches open to the Inner Sound. The area supports a variety of birds and fish, making it a quiet place for nature.
