Syberg

The Syberg rises above the Ruhr in southern Dortmund, part of the Ardey Hills. Its slopes are covered with oak, beech and hornbeam woods, and the steep southern face shelters one of only two colonies of common wall lizards in North Rhine-Westphalia. Sandstone quarried here in the Carboniferous era built many nearby towns, and traces of old pits remain along the riverbanks. A mining trail winds through the relics of 16th-century coal workings and later illegal diggings from the 1920s and post-war years. The hill’s geology also shaped the Ruhr’s first mining history, documented from 1580. Syberg became a strategic place in the late 8th century when Charlemagne captured the Saxon hillfort called Sigiburg. By the 12th century the Archbishop of Cologne built a castle on the site, and the Lords of Syberg served as his ministerials. A Romanesque church from 1169 stood at the heart of the settlement until wartime destruction in 1945, when its earlier Carolingian foundations were uncovered. The Vincke Tower, a neo-Gothic lookout of 1857, honours Ludwig von Vincke, whose wife came from the local noble family. Nearby, a monument to Emperor William I was privately funded and completed in 1902 after the state chose another site. Visitors follow paths past the Hohensyburg ruins and the Vincke Tower to a panoramic view over the Ruhr valley. The Kaiser Wilhelm monument still stands with its equestrian statue and flanking figures of Bismarck and Moltke, though some statues were removed in the 1930s. A war memorial of 1930, altered after 1945, lies within the castle remains. At the foot of the hill the Naturbühne open-air theatre has staged plays since 1952, and the Casino Hohensyburg overlooks the river. The Syburg church and Peter’s Spring add layers of medieval and legendary history, while old quarries and mining adits recall the hill’s industrial past.
