Downing College

Downing College stands on Downing Street in Cambridge, a single-storey college founded in 1800 after a long legal battle over Sir George Downing’s estate. Its neo-classical courts stretch from Lensfield Road, though only parts were built at first. The college’s reputation rests on law and medicine, fields encouraged by its founders. A 2012 study named it one of Cambridge’s two most eco-friendly colleges. A door from 10 Downing Street is kept in use here. The college’s history is tied to Sir George Downing’s will, which left his fortune for a Cambridge foundation after a series of deaths and lawsuits. William Wilkins designed the original plan for a grand quadrangle, but financial limits meant only the East and West ranges were finished early on. The chapel arrived in 1951, completing three sides of the court, while the fourth remains open as a paddock of mature trees. Recent additions include the Howard Building and Theatre, set behind the main court around a small garden. Visitors find a spacious court framed by neo-classical buildings and a large paddock at its centre. The Heong Gallery, opened in 2016, displays modern art in a converted stable block by Caruso St John. Students still row and play rugby at a high level, with the boat club holding headships in both Lents and Mays races. The Griffin magazine has served undergraduates for more than a century, while legal scholars like Clive Parry and Graham Virgo shaped the college’s academic standing.
