Schloss Oberviehhausen

Schloss Oberviehhausen stands in the village of Viehhausen, part of Sinzing in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. The building began as a medieval lowland castle first recorded in 1435. After destruction in the Thirty Years’ War it was rebuilt in 1681 as a small Baroque palace by Franz Wilhelm Rosenbusch. The last of the Rosenbusch family died in 1768, and the estate passed through several owners before becoming a convent in 1852. The site is worth visiting for its layered history and surviving architecture. The castle’s three-storey main block with hipped roof and stone portals dates from around 1700. A Baroque gateway and curtain wall still frame the entrance. Archaeologists have traced medieval and early modern remains beneath the grounds, while the former castle chapel now serves as the village parish hall. Visitors find a quiet square framed by the parish church on one side and the former palace on the other. The palace itself is now the parish house, its ground floor rooms still showing original stone doorways. A small Baroque garden once stretched south of the building, and traces of the gardener’s house and stables remain in the layout. The whole place offers a compact lesson in Upper Palatinate history without the crowds of larger sites.
