Burgruine Niederviehhausen

The Burgruine Niederviehhausen stands on a high plateau above the Schwarzen Laber in the Oberpfalz region of Bavaria. Built in the 12th century, it was first recorded in 1181 when a Brouno de Vienhusen held the fortress. The Viehhausen family, likely ministeriales of the Regensburg burgrave, owned it until 1266. The last of them, Ulricus Viehauser, later became abbot of Prüfening Abbey and died in 1390. By the late 13th century the Wittelsbachs took control, leasing it to various caretakers and pledging it to figures like Conrad the Reisacher and the Chamerau raiders. After destruction in the Thirty Years’ War the ruins passed through several hands before falling into decay. What remains is a six-storey rectangular bergfried, built around 1200, rising twenty-two metres with walls nearly two metres thick. Its buckle-quarried masonry still crowns the spur that once overlooked a neck ditch. Traces of the palas and surrounding curtain walls have vanished, though a bulge in the spur hints at a former zwinger. The site is registered as an archaeological monument, its stones silent witnesses to the Viehhausers, Rosenbuschs and others who shaped its medieval story. Visitors reach the plateau by a short climb and find the tower standing alone among grass and wild thyme. From its top the view stretches over the valley of the Schwarzen Laber to distant wooded ridges. The wind carries the scent of beech leaves and the sound of skylarks. A simple information board explains the site’s history without cluttering the scene. The silence and the sturdy stonework let the past speak directly to anyone who walks the quiet path.
