Faochag

Sgurr na Sgine – Faochag stands on the long ridge that runs from Glen Shiel down to Loch Hourn and Loch Quoich in the Scottish Highlands. It is a subsidiary summit of the larger Sgurr na Sgine, and its top is marked by a small cairn. The mountain is listed as a Sub Murdo and a Corbett Top of Munro, two recognised Scottish hill classifications. Surveyors last remeasured its height in January 2015 to confirm its place in the national records. Organisations such as the Scottish Mountaineering Club maintain these hill lists on the Database of British and Irish Hills. The route to the summit follows the main ridge from Glen Shiel, passing through rough grass and heather before reaching the final rocky rise. Walkers often combine it with the neighbouring Munros to make a longer day out. The views from the top stretch across Knoydart, Kintail and the distant islands of the Inner Hebrides. On clear days the peaks of Skye and the Torridon hills are clearly visible. At the summit cairn a simple trig point stands beside the stone pile. The ridge continues north-west towards Sgurr na Sgine and south-east towards the Bealach a’ Mhaim. The surrounding corries hold small lochans fed by the mountain’s streams, adding to the sense of remote Highland scenery. The whole walk offers a quiet contrast to busier glens, with only the sound of wind and occasional ptarmigan breaking the silence.
