Schloss Königshof

Schloss Königshof stands in the village of Königshof, part of Bruckneudorf in Burgenland. The baroque palace began as a 17th-century rebuilding of a mill site beside the Leitha river. For more than three centuries it served as the administrative centre for the estates owned by Heiligenkreuz Abbey. The abbey’s abbots guided its growth and repair after fires and plunderings. Abt Clemens Schäffer led the baroque remodelling and commissioned the Trinity chapel in 1676. His successor Abt Gerhard Weixelberger restored damage caused by Turkish raids and Kuruzzen raiders, leaving his coat of arms above the main gate. The chapel’s altar was carved by Thomas Rueff and painted by Matthäus Managetta, while the stonework was supervised by Hof-Steinmetzmeister Elias Hügel. Visitors find a quiet baroque residence with a walled forecourt and the small but richly decorated Trinity chapel. The chapel’s altar shows statues of Saint Benedict and Bernard, and the abbey’s historic coats of arms mark the walls. The Leitha’s banks and the surrounding fields recall the estate’s long role in managing stone quarries and farmlands.
