Carneddau Pen Plynlimon-Arwystli

Carneddau Pen Plynlimon-Arwystli is a group of round cairns in Blaenrheidol, Ceredigion. These ancient mounds date from the late Stone Age into the Bronze Age. Their purpose seems tied to burial rites and religious ceremonies. Cadw has listed the site under the reference CD035. The builders also raised chambered tombs, round barrows, stone circles and hillforts across the landscape. The round cairns stand on the high moorland near the source of the River Severn. Their builders lived when metal tools first appeared in Wales. They left no written records, but their stone structures remain. Some cairns mark single graves while others form small cemeteries. The ring of stones around each mound shows careful planning. A walk here passes low heather and wide views over Ceredigion. The cairns appear as grassy hummocks among the bilberry and cotton grass. Wind and rain have shaped the stones for thousands of years. The site sits far from roads, reached only by footpaths. It offers silence and a sense of deep time among the hills.
