Carnedd gron Carn Fawr, Ceredigion

A round cairn from the late Stone Age and early Bronze Age stands on Carn Fawr in Blaenrheidol, Ceredigion. The site sits at grid reference SN818905 on open moorland above the valley of the river Rheidol. Its purpose was probably linked to burial rituals and religious ceremonies of the time. Cadw recognises the cairn and has given it the SAM number CD246. The builders also raised chambered tombs, round barrows, stone circles and hill forts across the region. These monuments show how communities organised themselves during prehistory. Carn Fawr’s round cairn forms part of a wider pattern of ritual landscapes in Ceredigion. Visitors reach the cairn by following a track that climbs through heather moorland. The summit offers wide views over the Rheidol valley and surrounding hills. The stone mound itself is about ten metres across and still stands where it was first raised thousands of years ago.
