Schloss Böckstein

Schloss Böckstein stands in the village of Badgastein in the Salzburg Alps. Built between 1882 and 1884 as a hunting lodge for Count Rudolf von Czernin, it blends ‘old German’ and English styles. The first building burned down in 1902 and was rebuilt the following year by Josef Wessicken, a pupil of Ringstrasse architect Friedrich von Schmidt, with master builder Angelo Comini. The design mixes castle and country-house features with national-romantic touches. Today it serves as a summer and holiday home for the Czernin-Kinsky family. The private estate is not open to the public. The lodge’s setting is dramatic, surrounded by alpine forests and steep slopes. Its position high above the Gastein valley offers long views across the mountains. The building’s silhouette against the sky shows the contrast between its steep roofs and tall chimneys. Even from outside, the craftsmanship of the 1902–1903 reconstruction is clear. The mix of styles reflects the tastes of late 19th-century aristocratic life. Visitors can walk the forest paths that climb toward the lodge. From the Siegmundsweg below, the building appears framed by spruce and larch. The drive up passes old stone walls and iron gates that guard the estate. In winter the road is often lined with snow banks that rise above the car roof. The lodge itself remains hidden behind its own grounds, visible only in glimpses from the valley road.
