Schmerzensmannkapelle, Böckstein

The Schmerzensmannkapelle stands in Böckstein, part of the spa town of Bad Gastein in Salzburg. It is a large wayside shrine protected by law and holds a sculpture of the Man of Sorrows. The chapel sits below the church of Maria vom Guten Rat on the hilltop in old Böckstein. The sculpture inside was carved in 1851 by Kaspar Bichler. Its simple rectangular shape has a tent-like roof, giving it a quiet dignity. The rounded niche frames the figure, inviting passers-by to pause and reflect. The chapel is one of the few surviving monuments from the 19th century in this valley. Visitors find the chapel beside the winding road that leads up to the church. The surrounding houses are built in the local alpine style, with wooden balconies and green shutters. From here the view opens across the valley to the forested slopes beyond. The air carries the scent of pine and the sound of the nearby stream.
