Eas Dubh Gleann Tanagaidh

Eas Dubh Gleann Tanagaidh stands in a steep Highland glen where the land drops sharply and the air stays damp. The burn rushes down through narrow rock channels before plunging into deep pools below. Waterfalls are common here because the mountains force rivers to fall quickly over hard rock layers. The name ‘Eas Dubh’ is Gaelic and simply means ‘black waterfall’, describing the dark colour of the water as it rushes over the lip. Highland falls are counted in hundreds across the region, each formed by the same process of erosion and steep slopes. The tallest single drop in Scotland measures over two hundred metres, though many falls are smaller yet dramatic. Visitors reach the site by following a rough track that winds through heather and birch scrub. At the brink the burn disappears into a narrow shaft of rock, sending spray high into the air. The plunge pool below is deep and quiet, ringed by moss-covered boulders. From the lip there are long views down the glen to where the land levels out.
